1. THE SRIMAD-BHAGAVATAM IS BETTER THAN THE PHYSICS BOOK!
Many scientists, philosophers, and others question the authenticity of the Srimad-Bhagavatam. They believe that modern science with its 'advanced' physics can explain the universe and its activities more rationally and scientifically. Of course, hardly any such believers have ever read the Srimad-Bhagavatam. And, some of those who have, dismissed it as exaggerated, primitive or mythological. This is the general view which has also been taken up textbooks and the media in general. These views are grossly mistaken. When properly heard, the Srimad-Bhagavatam gives us answers to all questions. Srila Prabhupada writes:
"Srimad-Bhagavatam is the transcendental science not only for knowing the ultimate source of everything but also for knowing our relation with Him and our duty toward perfection of the human society on the basis of this perfect knowledge.... Human society, at the present moment, is not in the darkness of oblivion. It has made rapid progress in the field of material comforts, education and economic development throughout the world. But there is a pinprick somewhere in the social body at large, and therefore there are large-scale quarrels, even over less important issues. There is need of a clue as to how humanity can become one in peace, friendship and prosperity with a common cause."
Questions about birth, death, old age and disease, understanding of an ultimate controller and creator of the universe are all rationally and authoritatively explained in the Srimad-Bhagavatam. Questions of this type are hardly raised let alone satisfactorily discussed in modern universities without drawing the 'strange' eye look towards oneself.
"Bhagavata book and person are identical.... So by pleasing the devotee Bhagavata, one can receive the benefit of the book Bhagavata." - SB 1.2.18
"One can derive from the study of the Bhagavatam all benefits that are possible to be derived from the personal presence of the Lord. It carries with it all the transcendental blessings of Lord Sri Krsna that we can expect from His personal contact." - SB 1.3.41
These are very important points being made about the procedure of how to study the Bhagavatam and what benefit we can expect if we follow the procedure properly. People who quickly dismiss the Srimad-Bhagavatam as mythology never actually followed this procedure properly and thus their understanding cannot be accepted as representative of those who do follow this procedure. In modern science, there is first a theory, an experiment or procedure to verify the theory, and the results of the experiment. We can then draw conclusions based on the results whether they were as predicted by the theory or not. However, unlike modern science, here we are talking about a procedure which has a grand result of obtaining a personal audience with Lord Sri Krsna, the source of everything. This means the answer to everything since Lord Sri Krsna is sac-cid-ananda vigraha, the full form of eternity, knowledge, and bliss. In modern science, even if one spent his entire life performing the experiments that have been done in history as stated in the thousands of pages making up the physics, chemistry, biology, and other books, he would not finish. And even if one could finish, the experiments have nothing to do with solving our real and visible problems of birth, death, old age, and disease what to speak of the subject of the Supreme Godhead.
The Srimad-Bhagavatam is disclosed by the great devotee Sukadeva Goswami to Maharaja Pariksit who is awaiting impending death in seven days time. Maharaja Pariksit inquires from Sukadeva Goswami about the way of perfection. Sukadeva Goswami answers Maharaja Pariksit's questions in an assembly of learned saints on the bank of the Ganges. The qualifications of Sukadeva Goswami are that of an exalted self-realized person and thus he was able to impart the Absolute Truth as it is to Maharaja Pariksit. Sukadeva Goswami answered questions about the universe, the soul, about Lord Krsna, etc. for seven consecutive days. He was above the four defects of ordinary humans: (1) tendency to cheat, (2) tendency to make mistakes, (3) tendency to be illusioned, and (4) imperfect senses. Nothing in the modern science books is even close in comparison to the words of Sukadeva Goswami. What is constantly being updated, changed, and replaced [as in the case of modern science] cannot be taken as truth. Srimad-Bhagavatam is eternally true; it does not need updates or fixes. All the prophecies foretold in the Srimad-Bhagavatam have come true and will continue to come true.
There is great meaning to every syllable mentioned in the Srimad-Bhagavatam much more so than the equations found in the physics and mathematics books. The words of the Srimad-Bhagavatam are not to be dismissed lightly by our imperfect limited vision. More in the next issue...
2. LORD KRSNA HELPS KRISHNASOFT'S CUSTOMERS
A devotee customer purchased a multimedia Bhagavad-gita As It Is CDROM and a new computer. She had trouble running the CDROM on her machine and kept getting the error "Insufficient Memory" although she had 32 MB of memory [RAM]. The Gita CD only requires 8 MB of memory. She called technical support and we tried many different tricks to try to resolve the issue, but nothing seemed to make the CD work. She mailed the CD to technical support at Krishnasoft. We looked at it and there was nothing wrong with the CD as it ran perfectly on all of our test machines. We thought it was a machine-specific problem. We mailed it back to her along with another CD that installed the Gita CD in a different way on her machine. Neither CD seemed to work and the same error occurred. Finally, the customer seemed to give up after trying so hard to view the glories of the Supreme Lord Sri Krsna. She chanted her rounds and did some reading and finally gave it a final try. Walla!!! It worked from there on without a hitch!
